THE COMPOSER
Donato LOVREGLIO 1841 - 1907

Donato LOVREGLIO

Born in Bari , a sea - side city then oriented towards the East, , Donato lovreglio as a child became enthralled with the sound of wind instruments , at first the flute, then the clarinet and other wood - winds.

Newspapers recourt the young flautist ' s many triumphs at the town 's musical evnts. One discovers with surprise a beaming Donato , congratulated by many, amongst whom the very renowned writer Alexandre

DUMAS ( the author of Three Musketeers by the way) who chose him as his friend and Bard during his stay in in Italy. . The dynamic author , who was at the time a generous fan of Garibaldi, would ever say that Donato's flute had managed to soothe the throbbing pain of a recently lanced carbuncle.

Enraptured by the young artist, DUMAS went as for as offering to organize for him a tour of concerts to make him famous "in the whole world" .

On hearing him, he had written in the "Indipendente" of Naples on Nov 11 , 1863 a long article entitled " An artistic performance at a sick-bed " The following lines testify to his admiration:

" One who has not heard Lovreglio's flute cannot imagine what you can get out of a flute . These are magical sounds that Lovreglio, i would not say invents, but recreates. Close your eyes and you imagine you hear a lute, or perhaps a horn, a double-bass or a clarinet and when you hear the flute, the harmony is superior to all these."

Let us now give the word to professor Janvier Lovreglio, grandson of the composer and himself an excellent flautist.

Among the admirers of the young artist there was a young and lively brunette, Adelina Castelli, an excellent pianist to boot, who fell head over heels in love with him. She had to struggle against the usual prejudices of her class who considers musicians as servants whose only function is to entertain their guests at social gathering. Adelina did not give in, henece, crisis. Tears, shouts, threats were avail. The love between Donato and Adelina was stronger. Besides, they had a passion in common : music. Adelina played the piano admirably and was about to start a career as a concert pianist. Sustained by music and its magic, love conquered. The lovebirds played a number of pieces together, cooing the, and so my future grand-father, a flautist, married the woman who was to become my grand-mother, a pianist.

And that is how i came to loving the flute…

Thank you, Grandma, for succumbing to the attraction of the delightful flautist.

My grand-father was also a composer. The National Library in Florence is in possession of his works which are kept with care.

Schimidt's Dictionary of Music has thi to say about him :

"Lovreglio, Donato, flautist and composer (Bari 1841- Naples 1907). He composed a method and music forevery instrument, original pieces and fantasias on theater plays for flute, oboe, clarinet, duets, trios and septets as well as symphonies for orchestra and wind-band. Many of his works were published by the publishing house Ricordi."

Composing and concert playing were my grand-father's main activities. La Gazzetta Musicale di Milano gives him credit for having introduced in Italy the Böhm flute and calls him a "superb concert performer on the flute"

A new glow was given their family with the birth of their three sons Antonio, Luigi and Alberto. All three showed real gifts and took part early on in their parents' performances. But it was the youngest one who showed the greatest talent. As a child already he played beautifull Thalberg's sonata in concert, a piece which must have been difficult for his small hands and he achieved a great success. But when the audience heard him perform other concert pieces on the flute, then the violin, the entusiasm turned into ecstasy and enraptured people rushed to the podium to embrace him…

At another performance with his two brothers, La Gazzetta Musicale raves over the talent of the youngest of the who "players the piano, the flute and the violin beautifully". Then after extolling the merits of other two brothers, the article concludes "In the family Lovreglio, music runs the blood"

When Alberto himself started a family, he passered five children. The first-born Eleuthère had a brillant career as a composer and instrumentalist. Afther he was award at the Academy of Music in Nalpes, at the age of 16, two diplomas (composition and Instrumentation) - comparable to the First Prize in the French Conservatoire, he was appointed after severe competition First Violin at the Scala de Milan under the direction of the prestigious Arturo Toscanini.

He was a very talented composer and his works-published partly in France (the manuscripts being deposited at the Bibliothèque Nationale) were performed in Paris by the renowned Concerts Colonne, Pasdeloup, Lamoureux and Pleyel.

Eleuthère thus does his father Alberto justice as well as famous grand-father Donato Lovreglio.
